• Loud ? I disagree with that statement. I bough two of those Lysol about two to three months ago and I couldn't be happier. I promise you that loud they are not.

• To the best of my knowledge it is not harmful for children and pets. However I am not an authority on this subject

• does the spray harm fabrics or furniture finishes
• It does leave a film on the floor. I put on on my carpeted basement stairs and it did leave a stain 

• My unit doesn't have a time setting. Its has a turn knob on the back with a circle and progressively larger circles. How do I work it?
• The circle size reflects the intensity of the smell or the frequency of the sprays. The small circle means the least number of sprays, or 1 spray every 36 minutes. The medium size means a medium number of sprays, or 1 spray every 18 minutes and the large circle means the most number of sprays, or 1 spray every 9 minutes. This is how my air wick freshener works. My Lysol sprayer has the actual numbers of 

• Will this be good to freshen up a staircase that odors like cigarette smoke?
• Yes. It will take a week or so, but it will vastly improve the situation. We use this in rental properties where there is the smell of smoke, cats, dogs and general ambient odors. I was introduced to this product by a friend who uses it on boats for sale. He convinced me to use it when I was selling my house

With the other sprays you still scent the original I odor plus the spray and that is not what u want, you want the air to be clean smelling. Lysol spray really cleans the air!
